Yahoo! Answers: What would the "age of dwelling" be for a completely renovated h

Thank author of this post/commentI'm putting an offer on a house in New Orleans that has been completely renovated and raised after Katrina. The homeowners insurance broker I am working with was able to put the "age of dwelling" as 2010, even though it was originally built in 1971, after asking the contractor some questions about the house. This results in a $1000 decrease in the premium. Does anybody know what parts of the house have to be knew to qualify changing the age of the house for insurance purposes? I don't want to be denied a claim in the future because I misrepresented the age of the house.

Anything structural would be something to think about when deciding age of dwelling. Say later on down the road there is something behind the renovations like foundation cracks etc...that might arise. Insurance companies would have no problem balking on their promises to insure if it was found out that they are insuring a building older than they think.

I think it would be better if you could check the exact date when the house was originally built because from there you will get the basis for the age of dwelling. I think the insurance company has some supporting documents for the period of time the house was built. Have you contacted the contractors who built the house? It could provide some information as well. There are several options you can employ.

Thank author of this post/comment"Age of House"

The best thing to do is visit your City zoning or Land registry department. They will have all original paperwork dating to when the house was first constructed.

Hope this helps

Hi there! Yes, Danko, you are right. I think they are the best person to go to. For sure they have documents that will show the real age of the house as to when it was built. You could get all the information that you would need. .

I hope that you will get your answers there. Thank you so much and have a great day!
