Outdoor Oil Tank

I just came home from a fantastic 2 week holiday to find my home heating oil tank had been siphoned! Has anyone ever had this done to them before?! I'm so angry! How can I prevent this from happening again? Do you think a padlock will suffice or is there a better way to protect a tank from such theft?
